East Timor is one of the 10 Poorest countries in the world. There will one day be some oil and gas wealth, but official government policy is to save the wealth for the future. For now the government has 3 strategies for the people. Coffee plantations were once a source of wealth for a few and today are being encouraged. Tourism and Agricultural exports to Australia are the official government policy, but the official policy has yet to really get into the swing. Poverty during a five month drought period in inland areas is more of a reality.
