My first ancestor to come to Australia was my great -great grandfather, Samuel William Snape. He was a convict who was sent to the colony of New South Wales in 1833. He was 5 foot 6 and a half inches tall, with steel grey eyes and a ruddy complexion.
He was single, a farmer and stockman, could butcher livestock, and could read and write. He had a scar on the ball of his right thumb.
He served 7 years as a convict, then was released on a "Conditional Pardon", which meant he was a free man in Australia, but he could not travel home to Suffolk,England without special permission.
He must have been very handsome, there being a huge shortage of women in the colony, as he married within 1 year of receiving his conditional pardon.
My great-great-grandmother was named Elizabeth Carter, a "Five Pound Pom", who was a Cook. Together, they had 17 children, 11 of whom had children, but tragically their unmarried eldest son died of sunstroke at the age of 21, having attended a village sports day, in March (Summer) in northern New South Wales. Sadly they were too English, and had not yet learnt how to survive the heat in Australia yet.
Interests
I enjoy travel and have a goal to travel to the United States in second semester 2012 (October Conference). I intend to half learn Cantonese before I go. I would describe myself as a trainee schoolteacher, farmer and inventor. i hope to be a primary school teacher in a rural district high school in Western Austrailia.
